Google Display & Video 360 Announces Brand-Focused Initiatives

Google announced several new safety focused features for Display & Video 360 (DV360) DSP. For advertisers, it’s important to note that ads.txt inventory will become the default starting in August. In 2017, ads.txt was launched in an effort to reduce programmatic ad fraud. By listing authorized ad sellers in a file placed on publishers’ sites. Google also announced it will support ads-app.txt.

Google says DV360 will stop buying unauthorized app inventory.“While it’s very early days for app-ads.txt adoption, we’re actively working to encourage app developers to publish app-ads.txt files,” said a Google spokesperson.

A new dashboard will allow brands to have access to new settings. This dashboard view will allow users to get a quick view of a campaign and view settings, ads-txt authorized sellers and more. Brand Controls has built in fraud protection which shows what percentage of traffic was filtered before a bid was placed. Brand Controls also offers filters that can show what percentage of a campaign use content labels, sensitive categories, keyword exclusions and more.

Business Focused Tools Announced for Facebook Messenger

It was a big week for Facebook. The developer conference F8 had several announcements from the social media giant on most major platforms. One takeaway is that more private and small group messaging will be at the forefront of social media in an effort to promote privacy.

Facebook has been growing Messenger for businesses with the introduction of chat-bots several years ago. Now, they will be expanding on that with lead generation templates to ensure bots ask people standardized questions and receive a specific response. These templates will be accompanied with seamless hand-off to a customer service representative or scheduling for a phone call or appointment. Today, chat-bots do not work well with open ended questions.

Facebook is also testing appointment scheduling in Messenger. Later this year Messenger will also have a desktop app available that will mostly focus on chats, audio, and video communications.

The Facebook Updates You Need to Know About

At the annual developer conference on Tuesday Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook, announced plans to shift users towards private conversations and away from public broadcasting on social networks.

The conference also unveiled a redesign of the Facebook desktop and mobile app. The updates will include new features that will promote more small group conversations instead of messages and status updates on the news feed. The redesign is being hailed “FB5” and will be rolling out over the next several months. Zuckerberg is convinced these updates “will end up creating a more trustworthy platform.”

Facebook has made a conscious effort to push messaging apps WhatsApp and Messenger. This update will allow them to be in the forefront of changing social media behaviors and encourage more private and small community conversations.

There are updates to other platforms including Instagram. The photo-sharing social platform has a new camera feature called Create Mode which will allow users to create a post for stories that aren’t a photo or video. At the developer conference it was also announced that Instagram is going to be running testing on hiding likes for users. The company stated “We are testing this because we want your followers to focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.” The post creator will still be able to see the number of likes on a post.

They will also allow influencers to tag clothing items they are wearing in a post so followers can purchase within the app. Zuckerberg also announced Oculus, the virtual-reality company, will start shipping two VR headsets later this May.

With the expansion of YouTube TV and other platforms it can be difficult to know which advertising option to select. According to fresh Nielsen data, more than half of 18- to 49-year-olds in the U.S. are either light viewers of TV or do not subscribe to TV; but over 90 percent of these people watch YouTube. If you have never run ads on YouTube before it could be a good time to try and reach your potential customers in a different way. Let’s get into the different types of ads that are available to run. The first is Display Ads appear to the right of the feature video, and above the video suggestions list. Overlay Ads are semi-transparent overlays which appear on the lower portion of the video a user is watching. Skippable video ads allow viewers to skip ads after 5 seconds. Bumper Ads are non-skippable video ads of up to 6 seconds in length. Non-skippable video ads must be watched to completion before the desired video can be viewed. Finally, sponsored cards display content that may be relevant to the viewers’ video, such as products featured in the video. Over the next few weeks, Facebook has announced that they will be updated ad filters for advertisers. This is an effort to give advertisers better access to where brand ads are placed and address safety concerns. Advertisers will now be able to choose from these three options:
    • Limited inventory offers maximum protection, similar to the opt-in category exclusions available today
    • Standard inventory provides moderate protection and is the default choice when placing ads. This is the same as no category exclusions today.
    • Full inventory selects minimal protection and ads may be delivered to all eligible content.

The European Commission will be monitoring the social media giant to make sure these changes have been implemented worldwide by the end of June 2019.
